The Last remnants of the old town is the ski hill that still runs today. The ski hill was established in 1967 for Canada’s Centennial, running for over 50 years. It has received many grants over the years to fund its creation and expansion. The hill spans over 160 acres of downhill and cross-country trails, bigger than all the ski hills in Edmonton combined. It also has 1 of the 2 super half pipes in Alberta, the other being at Calgary Olympic Park. The hill has traded hands a few times over the years, almost being shut down. However, the community came together to ensure the hill would run every year.
Pine Valley Resort is a more recent addition to the community, providing a hall for weddings, dormitories for athletes, and an Olympic gymnasium. The gym has multiple foam pits, two trampolines (both a North American and European style) and every piece of equipment for all athletes, except a tumbling floor. Most of the equipment came from the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The Canadian and Taiwan men’s national teams have also trained at the gym.
Evolution Freestyle is a dry land training hill, just south of the ski hill, which was started by a member of the Freeriders Club so they could train year around. It’s a place where kids can practice their skills and try new tricks before hitting the snow. The training grounds include an obstacle course for agility and endurance, trampolines for body awareness, and airbag jumps for a safe environment to practice.
The Tawatinaw Valley Retreat is a small facility north of the ski hill where people can get away from the stress of the world. Open all year round, it has a range of activities as well as easy access to the other businesses in the valley.
